America's Favorite Sandwich: Grilled Cheese Takes the Crown

America's Favorite Sandwich: Grilled Cheese Takes the Crown

Is there any debate? The grilled cheese sandwich has officially claimed its throne as America’s top sandwich. That’s right, the ooey-gooey, buttery classic has won the hearts (and taste buds) of the nation.

A 2019 YouGov survey of more than 1,200 people revealed that a whopping 79% of Americans love or at least like the grilled cheese. From coast to coast, this comfort food staple is a crowd-pleaser. And Abigail's Oven REAL Sourdough bread takes it to new heights. (Click here for recipes or try this idea from Cynthia. She grills her cheese sandwiches in mayo not butter.)

Turkey and Chicken Sandwich Tie for Second

Coming in hot at a close second are the turkey and grilled chicken sandwiches, both earning a 75% likeability rating. While they might not have quite reached the grilled cheese level of adoration, they still hold a strong place in American sandwich lovers’ hearts.

Bacon: A Divisive Ingredient

You might be surprised to learn that despite the bacon craze, only the BLT made it into the top five sandwiches. It tied with ham at a 69% likeability rating. The club and plain bacon sandwiches couldn’t quite crack the top tier. (See our post on BLT for Sunday Brunch)

Regional Sandwich Preferences

While the grilled cheese reigns supreme nationwide, there are definitely some regional differences in sandwich tastes.Southerners have an even stronger love for grilled cheese, with 82% giving it their seal of approval. especially when it comes to grilled pimento cheese sandwiches.

Northeasterners are more likely to crave lobster rolls and meatball subs, while West Coasters lean towards the French dipInterestingly, Midwesterners seem to be the most traditional sandwich eaters, sticking closely to the national average.

One more fun fact: Midwesterners are also less likely to have tried exotic sandwich options like lobster rolls, crab cakes, and Cuban sandwiches.
