Honoring the Fallen on Patriot Day, a National Day of Service and Remembrance That Calls for Your Baking Skills

September 11th, 2001: A Day That Changed America

Patriot Day, designated on September 11th each year, serves as a solemn day of remembrance for the nearly 3,000 innocent victims who perished in the tragic terrorist attacks of 2001. It's a day to honor not only those who lost their lives, but also the incredible courage and sacrifice of the first responders who risked everything to save others.

If you are baking today, drop by your fire department, ER, or local police and leave a loaf of sourdough for your local first responders. And say thanks!

A Day of Reflection and Unity

September 11th, 2001, began like any other day for many. The sudden horror that unfolded forever changed the course of American history. As disbelief turned to concern, those on the ground faced unimaginable terror, while the rest of the nation witnessed the unbelievable unfold as first the twin towers in New York collapsed, a plane plowed into the Pentagon, and a fourth plane crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside.

Patriot Day: A Day of Service and Remembrance

Officially designated as both Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, September 11th offers a chance to reflect on the events of that day and the lessons learned. And can be a time to use your sourdough skills to serve your community! Donate, teach, partner, and volunteer.

    • Fundraise for charities: Host a bake sale to raise funds for charitable organizations that support your community.
    • Involve the community: Encourage local businesses and individuals to participate by donating baked goods or purchasing them.

    3. Teach Sourdough Baking Workshops:

    • Generate funds: Charge a fee for the workshops and donate a portion of the proceeds to a local charity.

    4. Partner with Local Businesses:

    • Supply local restaurants: Offer your sourdough bread to local restaurants for their menus.
    • Collaborate on events: Partner with local businesses to provide sourdough bread for community events or fundraisers.

    • Spread the joy of sourdough: Share your love of sourdough with others by gifting them with delicious baked goods.

    6. Volunteer Your Time:

    • Teach baking skills: Volunteer your time to teach sourdough baking to children or adults in local schools or community centers.
    • Help with food distribution: Volunteer at local food banks to help distribute food to those in need.

After writing this post I baked bread for two neighbors and worked on two more loaves to deliver to the local fire house.
