Ham Reuben Sandwich on Abigail's Oven Jewish Rye

Ham Reuben Sandwich on Abigail's Oven Jewish Rye

Prepare to be blown away.

This Ham Reuben Sandwich deviates from the usual corned beef or pastrami, but without a doubt, it is one of the best bites you'll ever taste. We're talking a colossal sandwich packed with incredible flavor that joins Abigail's Oven special group of Killer Sandwiches.

You know the classic Reuben: corned beef, rye bread, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island or Russian dressing. Delicious, right? But let us introduce you to its game-changing cousin: the Ham Reuben. And not just any Ham Reuben, it's a Killer Ham and Cheese Reuben.

This sandwich, introduced by Teri at Buy This, Cook That, is a masterpiece of layered perfection: tender Black Forest ham on our buttery toasted Jewish rye, all brought together by a homemade Russian Horseradish Sauce. Seriously, it's mind-blowing. (Don't even think about using store-bought Thousand Island or Russian for this sandwich, warns Teri.)

 A Note On Rye

Often overshadowed by its more glamorous cousin, wheat, rye is a grain with a remarkable history. Thriving in cold, harsh climates where wheat falters, it has been a staple for centuries in regions like Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

Beloved for its dense, flavorful bread, rye has recently enjoyed a resurgence, earning recognition for its nutritional benefits and culinary versatility.

Rye offers a wealth of health benefits. Packed with fiber, it contributes to satiety, improved cholesterol levels, and gut health. Rich in essential nutrients like magnesium, phosphorus, copper, selenium, and niacin, rye is a valuable addition to any diet.

  1. Prep the Meats: In a skillet, gently warm thinly sliced meats in a bit of butter.
  2. Build the Sandwich: Butter one side of a slice of rye bread. Spread the other side with Russian horseradish sauce. Place butter-side down in the skillet. Layer with cheese, warmed ham, more sauce, and sauerkraut. Top with another slice of bread, buttered side up.

Tips for the Best Ham and Cheese Reuben:

      • Bread Matters: Opt for Abigail's Oven (or other good quality) rye bread, preferably with caraway seeds, for extra flavor and texture.
      • Deli Meat is Key: Use high-quality, thinly sliced Black Forest ham. Don’t skimp on the amount!
      • Cheese Choice: While Swiss is traditional on a Reuben, Muenster offers a milder, meltier alternative that complements the other flavors beautifully.
      • Sauce is King: Teri's homemade Russian horseradish sauce is the secret weapon. It is addictive, zesty, and absolutely perfect.
It is easy to make, she says, and "is also excellent on cheeseburgers. Great to dip your chips or veggies in. Or, try a crispy onion ring in the Russian Horseradish Sauce. My word. Lights out," she exclaims!  Don’t be shy with it!

Serve warm with a dill pickle and chips. Enjoy!
